Hello, I have only seen one other question on this and the response was that it was common in 11.2, but fixed in 11.3. I'm on 11.5 and never as this until going to Big Sur. Soooo... help??
When I go to add a new contact, the windo opens, I start typing, and the window just closes without permission and without saving. Might get a name, three characters, or a few boxes filled, it seems random.
Thanks for any advice!
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities! It looks like you are seeing unexpected behavior when adding a new contact, and we'd like to do what we can to help.
Have you restarted your MacBook Pro since noticing this happening? If not, go ahead and do that, as a restart can resolve unexpected issues.
Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac
The latest macOS Big Sur is 11.5.2.

If it's still happening, do you sync your contacts with iCloud? Check here: Apple Logo > System Preferences > Apple ID > Select iCloud on the left sidebar > If Contacts is selected, you can add the new contact information from the iCloud website, and it will sync to your Contacts app. Log in with the same Apple ID. Are you able to successfully add a contact?
Add a new contact on iCloud.com
Thanks for all of these. I did them all and it's still happening. With the exception of 11.5.2, because it's 11.6 right now, but still the same thing. Contacts just closes the add or edit contact window mid-entry without warning. Logging in to sync contacts kind of defeats the purpose of having contacts on your computer... so... yeah... nice temp option until Apple fixes the problem, but not a permanent solution. Apple computer, Apple app, apple mouse, apple keyboard. Pretty much sold my soul to apple so .... it's definitely them. Sorry :-(
Thanks for trying those steps for us, we appreciate it.
The next test would be to try and add a contact while being in safe mode. This will help to isolate if the issue is with any login items, and safe mode does some system checks, so it may even resolve the issue.
How to use safe mode on your Mac
It may take longer to finish the start up while safe mode does the system checks, and can sometimes resolve issues. You'll also see some differences in the display. This is expected with safe mode, and when you restart normally, they'll be gone. Test adding a contact, then restart normally and test again.
If you're still having the issue while in safe mode, you'll want to contact Apple Support to look further into the issue. Get Support
If the issue did not happen while in safe mode, but still happens when restarting normally, here's some information on login items, as you'll want to test removing those items:
