Device not showing on desktop

My new ipad doesn't show up on my dekstop (iMac Hi Sierra 10.13.1).

Upgrading beyond Hi Sierra isn't an option at this time.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Start by Revealing the iPad's Connection:

First off, see if the iPad is even seen: 

1. Hold Down: the Option key
2. Click: the Apple menu
3. Choose: System Information or System Repor.
4. Select: USB from the list on the left
5. Verify: If you see your iPhone is revealed under a USB Device Tree.

Untrusted Devices:

Also, see about uninstalling third-party security software. Such software may have firewall settings and trusted device settings getting in the way here. If this is of no success, contact Apple Support.
