Does Apple support the rAW file format of Canon 1DX Mark III?

Questioner General

The 1DX Mark III has been out for about 10 months now. It would be handy if Apple's internals recognized the RAW file format, since many developers rely on those internals to process photos. Am I just missing something?

You're not missing anything. The camera is not supported as of Big Sur 11.1.

You're welcome. FWIW, it's not up to Apple alone. Apple also depends on camera manufacturers. You could try the trials of Affinity Photo, Pixelmator Pro, etc.

Dang. Thanks.

You're welcome. FWIW, many graphics apps support the format. You can also use Adobe DNG Convertor.

Adobe's color mapping is pretty ghastly, especially for nature photography, which is what I do. I still use Aperture, so DNG also makes the workflow pretty clunky. My little world would be a lot better if Apple would just support new cameras sooner, especially pro cameras.

But thanks. I appreciate the confirmation and suggestions.

Most of those vendors rely upon Apple's intergrated code in Quartz. I'll look at other RAW converters I guess while we all wait for apple.

It seems Apple have stopped supporting ALL cameras released in the last 12-15 months.

Why?

Manufacturers have supplied information but Apple are not supporting.

I ahem OlympusOM-D EM5 Mkiii not supported. Neither are Mx1, EM1 Mkiii.

All major software companies have done so.......eg Adobe, Microsoft, capture 1, On1...Come on Apple.

Frustration is now setting in.

When/ if Apple update its Camera RAW database with your cameras raw file instructions it will only be available on macOS Big Sur, Apple never make them backwards compatible with older OS's only the current one.

Apple stopped supporting Aperture 5 years ago and that camera RAW database has not been updated since then

and never will be, so you won't be able to use this cameras RAW files in Aperture.

You will need test out Adobes DNG converter and see if their colour mapping has improved, they're been at it

a long time so it may have improved from the last time you looked.

It is a free app so you should just give it another shot.

Either that or you buy some other software to do your raw processing and editing.
