NOT PRESENT: "Ignore ownership on this volume"

Questioner General

I have an external hard drive that I keep documents on so they don't take up space on my MacBook Air. I have not been able to drag files, name files, or copy and paste. I have read many statements in support groups to solve this issue by choosing "Ignore ownership on this volume". BUT it unfortunately isn't present when I go to "Get Info" -> "Sharing & Permissions" -> Unlock... not there?

I am not sure what to do because it is super frustrating not being able to do anything without using a smaller USB and a second windows computer.

Hi Casey_B123,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today. It sounds like you don't see the option "Ignore ownership" for an external hard drive.

Check out: If you don’t have permission to use files on a Mac disk. Are you the administrator? You may not see this option if you aren't.

Let us know further details.

Have fantastic day!
