Spoken Content wrecked by iOS 15.1 update

Questioner General

I use the Books app and Spoken Content to listen to large text files. I noticed issues after iOS 15 with Spoken Content skipping several lines of text or whole paragraphs. In spite of that problem, Spoken Content would speak the entire file to the end.

Now with iOS 15.1, the problem has worsened. If the screen is on, Spoken Content will continue to speak the file. But if the screen turns off, it will only read one or two more pages and then stop.

I've toggled off Spoken Content, done a hard restart, and toggled Spoken Content back on. The problem persists. I do not want to burn through my battery power by leaving my screen on all the time. Please fix this!
