Unable to see all directories/files on older external hard drive

Questioner General

I recently bought a new MacBook Air M1 and am trying to access files on an external Seagate hard drive. The hard drive was originally formatted as NTFS (as it was a backup for an old Windows laptop), but I'm only trying to retrieve files onto my laptop.

While all of the directories and files are readable from my older MacBook Air running on Catalina, I can only see some of the directories and files when I mount the hard drive onto my new MacBook. Some of the directories are completely empty while others have only a few files and subdirectories which are visible. I know the files are there since I can access them from my older MacBook, so not sure what the issue is using the drive with the new laptop. Any ideas?

I only want to read the files off of the NTFS hard drive; I have newer SSD that I can use for my backups.
