We want to use the new Mac mini as a home theatre sever. Can you download 4k movies with dolby atmos from itunes into your external storage from mac mini to playback without streaming. spotty internet here.
Not possible and not recommended unfortunately. Use Apple TV 4K.
There is some agreement with the studios producing 4K that
they don't allow downloads of local copies of any 4K material.
The same is true with Amazon Prime as well. You can only stream
4K content with them as well but can download FHD or SD versions.
Purchasing 4K from them, like Apple, only allows you unlimited
streaming rights.
Currently the only way it seems to have any legal form of local 4K content
is by purchasing UHD BluRays. I have seen some "4K download" sites but they
seem somewhat shady to me and not anyone I would trust a credit card to
or any other personal info.
We have the new apple TV 4K we use for streaming but we don't want to stream movies we own. We would rather have them available to watch without using internet, but we want them in 4k with dolby.
Not possible with the mini, sorry.
What is it possible with?
It’s impossible, movies on Apple TV are stream-only. If the movies you have are non-Apple, assuming they are DRM-OK (legit), you can use AirPlay but Atmos won’t be possible, unfortunately. Wait it out, others may chip in. Good luck.
All the movies we own are from iTunes. Just seems silly to use data for movies you own. I just want it downloaded and ready to play whenever we want. Thanks for the answers!
Has to do with DRM (digital rights management)...
